Library Happenings for the 2016-2017 School Year

Welcome back!! 🙂 The 2016-2017 school year is officially under way and we here at DC3 Library wanted to take a moment to let you all know about some of the fun things we have available for you to enjoy as well as to remind you of our hours and check-out policies. With Hastings going out of business, we’ve got all your entertainment needs covered (and for free!). Please remember, if there’s ever a book or movie that you want that we don’t have, we can get it for you via interlibrary loan. There’s no cost associated with it and all you have to do is ask at the front desk!

Makerspace: As many of you know, we have recently added a Makerspace to our Library (click here if you’re not familiar or would like a refresher) and it has been rapidly growing! Open for everyone to use, we have a 3D printer, a sewing machine, a soldering iron, an Arduino kit, origami materials, yarn, paints, sandpaper, hot glue guns, doll-making materials, fabric, circuits, robotics, Legos, beads, and more! The makerspace movement is all about providing free access to hands-on learning to everyone who wants it. You can make things here and take them home or bring in your own materials. Our makerspace is a constant work in progress, so if you have items that you would like to donate, please contact us.

As part of our Makerspace initiative, we offer Pinterest Project Workshops. Twice a semester, we choose a project from Pinterest and, for a low price, we provide all of the materials, space, and instructions for patrons to complete the project in a self-guided workshop. We prepare the craft ahead of time to ensure that it’s not a “Pinterest fail” and we have staff available to facilitate the event and answer any questions. Pinterest Project Workshops are always on a Thursday evening, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Here is a list of when this year’s projects will be:

2016-2017 Pinterest Project Workshops:

  • October 6th
  • December 1st
  • February 2nd
  • April 20th

More information about what projects we’ll be doing will become available as the events draw closer.

Also as part of our Makerspace initiative, we have a needleworking group, Pins and Needles, that will be meeting on Thursday evenings, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the main floor of the LRC, beginning August 25th. This group is open to everyone – all skill levels included. Whether you knit, crochet, cross stitch, or embroider, come and join us for a relaxing time, socializing with others who share the same or similar hobbies. Trade patterns, learn new techniques, or just come to share good company as you work on your latest project.

As DC3 Library is the official home to Nerd Union, we are host to Nerd Union Game Nights. Everyone is welcome to attend Game Nights – students, faculty, and staff alike. There’s something fun for everyone. Whether you like board games, dice games, card games, word games, party games, roleplaying games, or strategy games, we’ve got you covered!  Here is a list of when this year’s game nights will be:

2016-2017 Nerd Union Game Nights:

DC3 Library and Nerd Union will also be partnering with Dodge City Public Library for International Games in the Library Day, which will be November 19th, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the basement of Dodge City Public Library.

International Tabletop Day will take place in April, but the official date has not yet been released. We (DC3 Library and Nerd Union) will be planning a special gaming event around that holiday as we have done the past two years and we will announce plans as it draws closer.
